The Art of Mattering

Mattering Is Something You Build.

Welcome to the inner architecture of building your Mattering. Below you will find the framework, the four phases, and the language we will be using in our sessions.

You Matter!

What We Work On

Having completing the previous work, we can move on to the deeper “agentic” task of becoming a fully integrated and complete self.

Previously, it was about how much of your day was spent performing inside the life you built. Now when ambition outpaces your interior life, even a crowded room can get quiet. Our work going forward will be in order to discard performances you no longer need and replace them with ones that really matter. The following are the four negative patterns you will overcome.

ONE: The Performance Loneliness

You presently have a network, but not a tribe. Thus, this fix is not about even more networking, but rather is about creating and maintaining a group that with will support your success and help your to get where you want to go and with whom you can be fully honest and candid. Together you'll build trust, accountability, and the honest feedback needed to accelerate your growth.

TWO: The Ambitious Heart Gap

You give everything to your career and the people who depend on you, and your own interior gets the leftovers. We close the Ambitious Heart Gap by creating more satisfaction from your existing efforts and achievements — not by adding another self-care goal to your already busy calendar. Celebrate and learn to find contentment. This shift lets you reclaim inner peace without sacrificing your drive.

THREE: The Energy Inversion

The plateau or stagnation you may have noticed in your life or career is not a character flaw. It is the cost of running your nervous system in an energy-sapping mode for decades or more. Together we can pinpoint the exact systems in deficit and adapt an efficient focus on what really counts.  From there, we shift you into a state of sustained clarity, resilience, and high-impact performance.

FOUR: The Existential Drift

Success without a Reason for Being can be nothing more than unfocused high-speed motion. Together we will ascertain the parameters of your Mattering and establish an internal True North so that your efforts become more intuitive, aligned and inspiring. This clarity will turn momentum into meaningful sustainable impact that resonates beyond immediate achievement.

Our Framework

Your path from high-functioning loneliness to a life you can stand inside of.

Four phases. They are not a checklist — they are a sequence, and skipping any one of them collapses the next. We will move through them together, at a pace comfortable to you. Some clients spend a month in a single phase. Some spend six. Where you are right now is where we begin.

01

Pinpoint the Pattern

We will identify your avoidance stories and inherited definitions of success that have been ruling your life for the last many years. Sometimes this identification takes several minutes. No matter. We will sit in silence until it comes to you.

Map Your Ikigai

02

Together we will uncover your Reason for Being (“Ikigai” in Japanese) which is the intersection of what you love to do, what you are good at, what the world needs from you, and what you can build a life around. This will not be a worksheet exercise, but a deep dive into your essence.

Align the Five Pillars

03

We will integrate your Mental, Emotional, Physical, Social, and Spiritual aspects into a single, coherent identity. Most accomplished people overdevelop two areas while neglecting three. Our work will sequence this process in order to identify deficits and move forward to the next leverage point.

Champion Your Connections

04

You will move from merely performing inside relationships to being fully present in them. You will become the person other people confide in — including yourself. This is the phase where the rebuild becomes a way of living instead of a project.

The Layer Above

Brilliantly, Maslow gave us the pyramid, but now it’s time to improve on it.

Self-actualization, as Maslow framed it, is the realization of personal potential. It is a beautiful idea and it originates inside the self — which is exactly where the trouble starts. The self, on its own, is not a sufficient destination for a fully developed human.

You can become the best version of yourself and still wake up wondering if it is enough.

Mattering is the ultimate level. It is the experience of realizing that you have accomplished a great deal and that the world would be significantly less without you. This realization is the wholly grail of our work together and is where we will finally arrive.

You cannot close a 100/100 gap you have not named yet.

Most people assume relationships are 50/50 — you bring half, they bring half. The Mattering reframe raises your own bar to 100 and calls the other person to bring 100 too. Eight honest questions will tell you which half of the equation is actually the gap: the 100 you bring, or the 100 the rooms around you return.

The Layer Above

The addition of Mattering to Maslow’s pyramid completes the concept of human motivation and makes it more relevant in today’s world.

Mattering is not something that gets finished in a session. However, the framework above, the language of the four phases and the practice of pinpointing your own pattern are available to you now.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Description text The Mattering Mastery Program is my most immersive coaching engagement, designed for accomplished leaders who have arrived by every external measure — and discovered that success alone does not answer the question of whether their life counts. The work is to build Mattering on purpose. We do that on two sides at once. On the inside, we move through the four polarities that shape your own 100: Internal Self-Talk, Self-Efficacy, Confidence in Relationships, and Beliefs About What Is Possible. On the outside, we examine the rooms you live in through the lens of Significance, Appreciation, Investment, and Dependence — how seen, valued, supported, and needed you actually are. Together we move through the Four Phases: Pinpoint the Pattern, Map Your Ikigai, Align the Five Pillars (Mental, Emotional, Physical, Social, and Spiritual), and Champion Your Connection. This is Inner Work® at its deepest — not a workbook, not a worksheet. The outcome is a life you can stand fully inside of, where the external success finally has an interior to match it. You are naturally creative, innovative and resourceful. You matter!

  • This is a question I get often, and it's an important one. Therapy is healing-focused — it looks backward, metabolizing what has already happened to help you resolve wounds from the past. Coaching is excellence-focused — it looks forward, assuming you already have the resources you need and partnering with you to unlock your next chapter. The Mattering Mastery Program sits firmly in the coaching tradition. I work with accomplished people who are not trying to heal a diagnosed wound — they are trying to architect a life that actually matters to them. That said, the line is not always clean, and part of my responsibility as an ICF-credentialed Master Certified Coach is to know the difference. If what you truly need is therapy, I will tell you so honestly, and I have trusted referrals I can point you to. When coaching is the right container, the work is to move you from where you are to where you have the capacity to go — not from pain to baseline, but from baseline to extraordinary.

  • Most of us were taught that a healthy relationship is 50/50 — you bring half, the other person brings half, and together you make one whole. I think that math shortchanges everyone. It asks you to show up as half a person and calls it partnership. The Mattering reframe is addition, not division. You bring 100 — your own honesty, your own voice, your own presence, your own care — and you raise the bar for the other person to bring 100 too. When both sides bring 100, you create 200, not 100. This is the architecture of a relationship that actually holds you. The 100/100 Assessment on this page measures both halves of that equation: the 100 you are currently bringing (your own Inner Work®), and the 100 the rooms around you are returning. Most people discover that one dimension is significantly further along than the other, and that gap is exactly where the most important work lives. The program is how we build both sides to 100 on purpose.

  • I offer three distinct paths, and each one answers a different question. The Executive Athlete path is for leaders who need sustainable performance on demand. We train the 90/10 model: how to produce peak output inside ten percent of your week so the other ninety percent can do the recovery that makes the peak possible. The Inner CEO path is identity architecture — for leaders who are ready to rewrite the internal voice they report to, upgrade the rules of the game they have been playing, and lead themselves before they lead anyone else. The Mattering Mastery Program sits above both. It is the question underneath the question: why does the performance matter, and who is it actually for? Many of my Mattering clients have already done one of the other two paths and arrived at the deeper inquiry. Others begin here because they know this is the layer they are being called to. If you are not sure which path is right for you, the 100/100 Assessment above is a strong first signal — and a conversation is the best second.

  • This program is not for someone looking for tactical advice about the next promotion, a quick framework to get through a hard quarter, or a cheerleader to validate what they already believe. It is not for someone who wants a workbook and a deadline — Mattering does not compress into a sprint. It is also not for someone who is not yet ready for the quiet, uncomfortable parts of the Inner Work®. The people who thrive inside this program are leaders who have already succeeded externally and have decided they are ready for a different kind of work — the kind that cannot be outsourced, accelerated, or performed. If that is not where you are right now, that is completely OK. It just means the timing is not aligned, and we can reconnect when it is.

  • There is no fixed length, because there is no fixed client. The program is scoped to your goals, your pace, and the depth you are ready for. Some clients move through the Four Phases in a matter of months. Others spend months inside a single phase — and that is often where the most important work happens. Typical engagements range from three to six months at a minimum, with many clients choosing to continue well beyond that as the work deepens and new layers emerge. We begin with a conversation. From there, we design an engagement together that matches where you are and where you are trying to go — weekly or bi-weekly sessions, with space between sessions for the reflection and integration the work requires. The four phases are a sequence, not a checklist, and we move through them at the pace your real life can hold.

  • The assessment is the map, not the work. What it gives you is a clear, honest read on which dimension of the 100/100 equation is asking for your attention first. If your Inner score is lower than your Outer, we begin with the relationship you have with yourself — the voice in your head, your follow-through, your confidence in your own needs, and your beliefs about what is possible. The outside rarely changes until the inside does, so this is where we start. If your Outer score is lower, we begin with honest inventory — which rooms deserve the 100 you are bringing, and which have been quietly costing you more than they return. If both scores are low, we begin with the inner work, knowing the outer will follow. If both are already high, we do the nuance pass — the last 25 points on either dimension, where the most interesting coaching lives. Whichever quadrant you land in, the assessment gives us a shared starting point for the conversation, and the conversation is the true beginning.
